December has been a fun and busy month in 1D. In math, we have been measuring and developing our number sense. This will help us learn our math facts more effectively in the next few weeks. In reading, we have just begun our fairy tale unit. We will be focusing on the elements that make fairy tales special, as well as identifying the characters and setting of a story and retelling the sequence of the story. We are also learning how to identify new words and try to solve their meaning. In addition to all of this, we have been learning about how some areas of our brains work (specifically, the prefrontal cortex "the wise leader", the amygdala "the security guard", and the hippocampus "the memory saver". Don't be surprised to hear your first grader talk about calming down their amygdala!
With the cold temperatures, we have been stuck inside most days for recess. So, we have been learning new games and we even had a "snowball" fight with paper snowballs!
Reminder - this Friday (December 23rd) is gingerbread house day! Parents or other important adults are invited to join their student from 12-1 in our classroom to build gingerbread houses. Please send in your child's gingerbread supplies by TUESDAY so that we can plan and prepare. See you there!
Friday is also PJ day!
I hope each of your families have a safe and wonderful winter break. We will see you back on January 3rd.

We had a blast at the bowling alley for our first trimester LEAD celebration!
