"This week, we learned about quarter past time. So, when the big hand is on the three, it's "quarter past". We are also learning about timelines.

This week, I invited two of our first grade students to help update our website. They wanted to tell you all the news from 1D, and update you on what we are learning. Enjoy!
"This week we have been learning that reading is THINKING! In real books, you can learn something new. We have been learning lots of different things. We mark it with an L. Sometimes we read magazines to learn about some animals. If you go to PebbleGo, you can learn about biographies about all different kinds of people. Did you know George Washington is on the quarter and he was the first president ever? We have been writing biographies, too! We interviewed other first graders to learn about them, and now we are writing their life stories. Come check them out in the hallways of our school! In math, we are still learning about dimes, nickels, and pennies. We also work on reading the time. We have been working on rulers and using the numbers and marks to measure inches." - A.K. and L.J. I hope that all of your families had a safe and wonderful winter break!
Our first week back to school has us learning about biographies and how to mark our new learning while we read. We will be interviewing other first graders and writing biographies about them! In math, we will be working on measuring length to the nearest inch, as well as using a tape measure. On Tuesday, we will have a guest speaker from the community talking with us about positive words and the book Words are Not for Hurting. It should be a great week back to school! Just a reminder: feel free to send me any questions or comments you may have - via email, phone call, notes in the planner, or even comments on these posts on the website!
The first week of December leads us to our exploration with frames-and-arrows diagrams and dimes. In the next two weeks, we will talk about trading coins and counting groups of coins with dimes, nickels, and pennies.
We will also be continuing our unit on frogs - exploring the life cycle and comparing different texts on the same topic. The end of Trimester 1 is this Thursday, which means we get to go bowling! For students who have earned all of their LEAD stamps for outstanding behavior, we get to head to the local bowling alley! This also means that we have no school on Friday, December 4th. We had a blast learning aboard the "Mayflower" last week! Now that we have "landed", we are learning about the daily life of the Wampanoag Native American tribe during the 1600s, and comparing it to our own lives. Then we will be talking about the first thanksgiving, and how it compares to current-day celebrations. We will end the week on Tuesday by watching Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving and having our own Charlie-Brown-themed feast.
Through all of this, we will also be practicing telling time to the nearest hour and half hour, counting groups of pennies and nickels, creating patterns, and continuing to work on our reading strategies (Tryin' Lion, Chunky Monkey, and Flippy Dolphin). For more information on these strategies, check out our "Reading Strategies" section in the "More..." tab above. Have a great week! Remember: No School November 25-27. This week, our first graders will venture into life as a Pilgrim. From experiencing a journey on the Mayflower, to discovering life in a Pilgrim colony, we will be studying the differences between Pilgrim life and ours. We will even be making and tasting hasty pudding! Along with studying past vs. present, we will be learning about telling time to the half hour (7:30, 10:30, 1:30, etc.), adding and subtracting using the number line, and Habit #6 - Synergize. In reading, we will be learning how to visualize what we read. This means picturing a story in our minds (we call it making a "mind movie") as we read. Please encourage your student to talk about their visualizing as they read at home this week! Last week, we got a new student in our class, and met our 5th grade Lead Buddies! It was definitely an exciting week.
This week, we begin our new unit on frogs! This unit will help us explore nonfiction books, learn new vocabulary, and discuss similarities and differences between characters in fiction books. Also this week, we will be discussing Habit #5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood, and talking about the Stretchy Snake reading strategy (say all the sounds in the word and blend them back together). In math, we will be talking about number models involving money (ex: I bought a sucker for 3 cents and a gumball for 2 cents. I spent 5 cents. 3+2=5) and exploring patterns - both with shapes/colors and with numbers. Please watch your student's planner for updated fluency and sight word scores. We will be retesting these items in the next two weeks. I will also be sending home book orders. If you would like to order books, they are due November 19th. I hope your families had a great weekend! Today we had the fantastic opportunity to plant wildflower seeds in Leo Rudolph Nature Park. We planted milkweed, coneflower, hyssop, aster, clover, sunflowers, and several other types. These seeds will help attract butterflies and other pollinators to the nature reserve. We also used our senses to observe how nature changes in the fall. Check out our pictures below: |
